How to Season a Cigar Humidor

Start right. Smoke right. Smoke to Enjoy.

Seasoning your humidor is a crucial first step before storing any cigars. Skip this, and your cigars will dry out, burn hot, and lose flavor. Here’s how to do it right.

Why Seasoning Matters:A dry humidor will suck moisture out of your cigars. Seasoning preps the wood, stabilizes humidity, and protects your collection.

What You’ll Need:

  • Distilled water (never tap or bottled water)

  • Spray Bottle filled with distilled water

  • Clean sponge or cloth

  • Small bowl

  • Hygrometer (digital preferred)

  • Humidification device (Boveda packs, gel jars, or beads)

  • Time (give it 3 to 5 days minimum)

Step-by-Step:

1. Calibrate Your Hygrometer Before anything, make sure your hygrometer is accurate. Use a salt test or calibration kit.

2. Wipe Down the Interior Lightly dampen a clean cloth or sponge with distilled water. Gently wipe down all exposed Spanish cedar inside the humidor — including the lid, walls, and trays. Do not soak the wood. Just lightly spray some of the wood to keep moist.

3. Place a Bowl of Distilled Water Inside and lightly Spray some distilled water Set a small open container or sponge soaked in distilled water inside the humidor. Close the lid.

4. Let It Sit (3 to 5 Days) Keep the humidor closed and let the cedar slowly absorb moisture. Check the hygrometer daily. You’re aiming for 65%–70% humidity.

5. Add Humidification Device Once the humidity levels hold steady around 70%, remove the water bowl and insert your chosen humidification system (like Boveda packs).

6. Load Your Cigars When the humidor is stable, your cigars are ready to go. Keep monitoring humidity and recharge your device as needed.

Final Tips:

  • Never rush the process — underseasoned humidors can damage premium cigars fast.

  • Avoid over-saturating the wood — warping and mold are your enemies.

  • Store the humidor in a cool, dark place away from sunlight and heat.

Conclusion:A properly seasoned humidor is the foundation of cigar care. Take the time to do it right, and your cigars will reward you with consistent flavor, proper burns, and long-term aging potential.
